Six days among tea gardens, the UNESCO toy train, Tiger Hill sunrises over Kanchenjunga and the Tibetan monasteries of Ghoom — Darjeeling the way it deserves to be felt, slow and above the clouds.
Dorje-ling — “the land of the thunderbolt.” A ridge at 2,042 metres where British tea planters, Tibetan monks, Gorkha poets and Everest sherpas all built home, with the third-highest mountain on earth standing over it like a guardian.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway climbs from the plains at New Jalpaiguri on a two-foot gauge, reversing up zig-zags and loops, whistling inches from shopfronts on Kurseong's main street. We ride the heritage steam section from Darjeeling to Ghoom — Asia's highest station at 2,258 m — the way travellers did a century and a half ago, elbows out of the window, coal smoke over the tea gardens.

First Flush, March–April · The Tea Gardens
Eighty-seven estates wrap the ridges in a geometry of green — Happy Valley, Makaibari, Namring — planted from seeds Dr. Campbell sent out in 1841. Walk the rows with a planter at first light while the mist is still in the bushes, watch the two-leaves-and-a-bud pluck, then sit in the factory as the day's leaf is withered, rolled and fired. The tasting that follows will ruin supermarket tea for you forever.

Leave at 4am. As the first light travels down from the snows, the entire Kanchenjunga massif — five treasure-houses of snow, the world's third-highest — burns pink and gold; on the clearest mornings Everest shows itself on the horizon. Descend through the Batasia Loop, where the toy train spirals around the Gorkha war memorial with the whole range behind it.

Founded 1850 · Ghoom Monastery
Yiga Choeling, the old monastery at Ghoom, belongs to the Gelugpa order — the school of the Dalai Lamas. Inside, a nearly five-metre clay Maitreya Buddha waits between rows of butter lamps and rare Kangyur scriptures. Go early, when the monks chant morning prayers and the only other sound is the wind in the prayer flags strung across the ridge.

Sikkim's guardian deity and the world's third-highest mountain fills Darjeeling's northern sky. It's the backdrop to everything here — the toy train, the monastery flags, the planter's verandah — and it never looks the same twice in a day.

Tiger Hill & Ghoom
4am sunrise over Kanchenjunga at Tiger Hill, the Batasia Loop and war memorial, then butter lamps and the Maitreya Buddha at Yiga Choeling monastery.
Day 3
The Toy Train
Heritage steam joyride Darjeeling–Ghoom, the DHR museum, Chowrasta, the Mall, Keventer's and Glenary's for an old-world evening.
Day 4
Tea Day
A working estate walk with a planter, factory tour, first-flush tasting. Afternoon at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and zoo.
Day 5
Mirik & the Border
Drive through tea country to Mirik's lake, Pashupati market on the Nepal border, and a momo-making evening with a local family.
Day 6
Departure
Slow breakfast facing the snows, last walk down the ridge, drive down to Bagdogra.
