Rajasthan rewards travellers who resist the urge to tick off cities. The state is vast, and the difference between a rushed circuit and a memorable journey usually comes down to two or three fewer stops.
Begin in Jaipur, but give it three nights rather than two. The old city's artisan quarters — block printers, blue potters, gem cutters — are best explored slowly, on foot, in the cool hours after sunrise.
From there, move west. Jodhpur's blue city and Jaisalmer's living fort are the emotional heart of any Rajasthan itinerary, and the drive between them, through mustard fields and small market towns, is part of the experience.
Our advice: end in a smaller place. Bundi, Narlai or Deogarh give you the quiet that makes the grandeur of the earlier days settle in.
